Should I be concerned about child labor? |
 |
ore than ever before there is a combined effort on the part
of exporters and importers in the rug producing countries to monitor the weaving of
Oriental rugs by children, and to see that public education is a priority.
In many cases children are weaving in their own homes as career training and as a family
activity. This supplements the family income and prepares them for a career. Please join
us in supporting the efforts of the Oriental rug industry and various government agencies
to protect children from exploitation while we support economic growth and educational
opportunities. |

How is an Oriental rug different from a machine made? |
 |
true Oriental rug is hand woven in a Middle Eastern or Asian
country like Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, China, Tibet, and the Central
Asian Republics. The nap or surface of the rug is hand tied -- hundreds of knots to the
square inch.
In a machine made rug the nap is looped around the foundation rather than hand knotted.A
handmade Oriental rug usually maintains or increases its value over time and outwears most
any other kind of rug. A life-span of 75 years is not uncommon.
